Deputy Nursery Manager

Job Specification

Purpose of the Role

To support the Nursery Manager in the day-to-day leadership of Bright Start Nursery, ensuring the delivery of exceptional childcare, education, and compliance. The Deputy Manager acts as a role model for staff and assumes full responsibility for the setting in the Manager’s absence.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Operational Support

  • Assist in leading staff teams, room practice, and curriculum development.
  • Model outstanding interactions and pedagogy for practitioners.
  • Support the Manager with audits, team monitoring, and quality improvements.
  • Manage the nursery when the Manager is off-site.

2. Safeguarding & Compliance

  • Act as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL).
  • Ensure all staff follow safeguarding procedures.
  • Maintain accurate record-keeping including incident logs and risk assessments.
  • Support health and safety monitoring across the setting.

3. Staff Support & Development

  • Provide coaching and mentoring to room leaders and educators.
  • Conduct supervisions and contribute to performance reviews.
  • Support new staff inductions.

4. Parent Communication

  • Build strong relationships with families, offering support and guidance.
  • Help manage parent queries and maintain clear communication.
  • Participate in parent meetings and nursery events.

5. Administration & Organisation

  • Assist with rota planning, staffing levels, and room deployment.
  • Contribute to admissions processes, tours, and enquiries.
  • Support policy reviews and nursery documentation.

Essential Requirements

  • Level 3 or above in Early Years.
  • Strong knowledge of EYFS, safeguarding, and Ofsted requirements.
  • Experience in a senior or supervisory role.
  • Ability to lead teams and model best practice.

Desirable Requirements

  • DSL training.
  • Experience leading rooms or curriculum areas.
  • SEND knowledge.
